Pillars of the Earth

Pillars of the Earth

I have read this book a few months ago, but did not review it on my blog. It’s quite a big book with over 900 pages (41 hours via audio), but once you start reading, you can’t put it down. I never would have thought that I would be interested in a book that takes place in twelfth century England, but I found it highly engrossing. The characters include an idealistic master builder, a pious and compassionate prior, a ruthless bishop, and a loathesome woman. In addition, there are the heroes and heroines with some romance thrown in, and oh, I have to mention; plenty of violence, too. I’ve learned while reading this book that people are people, everywhere. The story just happens to be in England’s twelfth century, but it could also apply to present day.

Initially, I wanted the iPad, since I’m an Apple fan, but it is just too big and all I really want is an e-reader, mainly for newspapers and books. My next choice was the Nook, but I thought I’d try the Kindle because I’ve read that the screen is much improved and the controls are simpler. Each has their pros and cons. At these prices, though, you could really afford both.
