The Help

The Help

I just listened to an audio version of a marvelous book, The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The story takes place in the segregated south of the 60′s, or Mississippi, to be precise. It is about three women, two are black and one is white, who set out to bravely attempt to change the attitudes of people who believe that any race or gender was superior to another. Now, I know you’re going to think that the subject of racism can’t be interesting, but this book was totally engrossing. The story is not only enlightening, but it is told with warmth and humor and the characters are unforgettable.

Christmas Gifts

Christmas Gifts

Merry Christmas 2009! Hope you’re spending it with friends or family, or both. It’s just one day, but we look forward to it every year and prepare for it for months. All the gifts are wrapped and will be opened tomorrow. All that time spent selecting just the right gifts and wrapping them so carefully and it will be over so quickly, but the memory of the day will linger. I hope you and yours have a wonderful day and make some happy memories.

I saw the new Avatar movie today. The reviews have been so positive, and I couldn’t wait to see it myself. It’s just a beautiful movie, with vivid colors and wonderful special effects. There’s no bad language or sexuality, so it’s OK for kids. Even though it’s almost 3 hours long, it held my interest throughout. Roger Ebert gave it a great review, and I usually agree with his reviews. I won’t go into the story line, because you can read all about it on Roger Ebert’s site, but it is an epic entertainment with an anti-war message and is an altogether extraordinary film. After seeing it, I’m sure you’d agree.

Shopping Online

Have you started your Christmas shopping? I’ve done some, but only online. I’ve found that it’s the quickest and easiest way to get things done: no driving, taxes, shipping charges or crowds! Check out Styletips 101 for some great holiday shopping tips! If you’re buying gift cards, you can usually buy them at the grocery store, saving a drive to the mall. With only three weeks left before Christmas, there isn’t much time left to get our shopping done. If you’re going to order anything online, now’s the time.
